That was crucial because the Soviet Union minus the parts the Germans occupied couldn't really feed itself long-term, especially not after the Soviets transferred tens of millions of people out of the zones the Germans occupied.

The Soviets needed every bushel of grain they could get out, and every day the German attack held off meant more time for the harvest to mature so the Soviets could get it out and stockpile it for the food-short years that were coming.

German forces in Romania were relatively weak in armor compared to what they had further north, and the Romanians weren't all that good, but the Germans would have probably switched enough forces to hold short of the oilfields, then tried to hook around behind the Soviet offensive and cut them off.

Given German tactical mobility, it would have probably worked. Another issue: Allied aid to the Soviets would be a harder sell to the British and US public if the Soviets were the aggressors rather than being attacked. Granted, it would be a preemptive attack rather than really aggression, but that would be a tougher sell anyway. The Brits and Americans would provide aid anyway, I think, because keeping the Soviets in the war was, if not vital to winning the war, at least vital to winning it at an acceptable manpower cost to the west, and the allied leadership knew it.

They might have to provide the aid in less obvious forms at first--trucks and food and radios and aluminum and precursor chemicals for explosives rather than tanks and artillery and ammunition.

Of course that sort of stuff was the more effective kind of aid anyway.
